Not every material behaves the same way. Some cut clean and engrave beautifully. Others release toxic fumes, melt into a gooey mess, or damage your machine outright. This guide breaks down what works, what to avoid, and what settings to keep in mind, whether you're running a diode, CO₂, fiber, or galvo laser.

Materials That Work Great

Wood

The most forgiving and popular material for laser work. Plywood, MDF, basswood, and birch all engrave and cut cleanly on CO₂ and most diode lasers.

  • Best for: Cutting, engraving, photo etching
  • Tip: Avoid pressure-treated wood — the chemicals used in treatment can release harmful fumes when burned.

Acrylic

Cast acrylic engraves with a frosted, professional finish and cuts with a smooth, flame-polished edge on CO₂ lasers.

  • Best for: Signage, awards, display pieces
  • Tip: Cast acrylic (not extruded) gives far better results — extruded acrylic tends to melt and bubble more.

Leather

Genuine and vegetable-tanned leather engrave beautifully, producing a dark, rich contrast that's popular for wallets, belts, and pet accessories.

  • Tip: Avoid bonded or chrome-tanned leather — the chemical coatings can be hazardous when burned.

Anodized Aluminum

  • Best for: Tumblers, tools, industrial parts, nameplates
  • Tip: Requires a fiber or MOPA laser — CO₂ and diode lasers can't mark bare or anodized metal effectively.

Stainless Steel

With the right fiber laser settings, you can achieve everything from matte engraving to vivid color marking (a technique called laser annealing).

  • Best for: Tools, jewelry, industrial labeling
  • Tip: Color marking depends heavily on speed and power — small test grids save a lot of wasted material.

Slate and Stone

Slate coasters and stone tiles engrave with a clean, high-contrast white finish that's extremely popular for personalized gifts.

  • Best for: Engraving only (not cutting)
  • Tip: Use a rotary attachment for cylindrical stone or glass items like tumblers.

Paper and Cardstock

  • Tip: Lower power and higher speed prevent scorching on thin paper.

Materials to Avoid — Ever

Some materials should never go under a laser, regardless of machine type, because they release toxic or corrosive fumes:

  • PVC (vinyl) — releases chlorine gas, which is corrosive to both lungs and machine components
  • ABS plastic — releases cyanide gas when cut
  • Polycarbonate — tends to burn rather than cut cleanly and can release harmful fumes
  • Fiberglass — releases toxic fumes and glass particulate
  • Any material of unknown composition — when in doubt, look up the safety data sheet (SDS) first
