What is a CNC Router?
To understand what exactly a CNC Router is, it is important to know what the word CNC means. CNC is an abbreviation of the English description “computerized numerical control“, and refers to an electronic method for controlling machine tools. Consequently, a CNC Router Machine is nothing more than a machine tool, which is numerically driven with computer assistance to process a variety of materials, such as Metals, wood, granite and much more.
A CNC router can mill complex shapes and fine contours in different materials by moving a high-quality tool through the clamped workpiece on a least three axis. The bridge itself is the X-axis and its back- and forward-movement symbolises the Y-axis. The up- and down movement of the milling tool stands for the Z-axis. The bridge looks like a portal, and this is why a CNC Router is also well-known as a portal milling machine.
What materials can Our CNC Router process?
A CNC router can machine a lot of different materials.
Here listed just a few materials that can be machined 2D or 3D:
- Metals / Non-ferrous metals
- Brass
- Aluminium
- Titanium
- Noble metals such as silver, gold
- Steel and cast steel
- Wood
- Multiplex
- Plastics
- Acrylic glass
- Granite and marble

It is important to know that a few materials require spray cooling during the machining process, either for cooling down the milling tool, the material or to bind the chips. What can happen if a spray cooling is necessary but there isn’t any during the milling operation?
- Chips can clog or glue the grooves of the milling tool until it breaks.
- The blades of the milling cutter can get blunt quickly which prevents accurate milling results.
- Plastic can melt if it becomes too hot.
How Does the Machine Move? (Simple Axes Explanation)
- Left and Right → X-Axis
- Forward and Backward → Y-Axis
- Up and Down → Z-Axis
These movements allow the machine to cut flat designs and 3D shapes
What Is the Spindle?
The spindle is the motor that holds and spins the cutting tool.
You can think of it like:
- A drill motor, but much stronger and more precise
The spindle:
Spins very fast
Cuts through Wood, Metal, Plastic, or Stone

What Is a Rotary Device?
The Rotary Device is also called the 4th Axis.
What Does It Do?
It allows the machine to rotate round objects while cutting.
Without a rotary:
- The machine works only on flat materials
With a rotary:
- The machine can work on round and cylindrical objects
What Is It Used For?
- Table legs
- Chair legs
- Columns
- Cylindrical statues
- Pipes
Think of it like:
A BBQ rotisserie that slowly turns food while it cooks — but here it turns material while it is being carved.

⚙️ Machining Plastic with a CNC Router
| Factor | Optimal Setting/Tool | Why it is Important |
| Tooling | Single Flute or O-Flute Cutters (especially for Acrylic). | These bits have larger channels to rapidly evacuate the plastic chips, preventing them from melting and sticking. |
| Speed (RPM) | High Spindle Speed (e.g., 18,000 RPM or higher). | Faster RPM means the tool cuts the plastic faster than the heat can dissipate into the material. |
| Feed Rate | High Feed Rate (moving the tool quickly). | A high feed rate creates a larger, thicker chip, which carries more heat away from the cutting zone. This minimizes heat transfer to the workpiece. |
| Chip Removal | Strong Vacuum System or Air Blast. | Essential for immediately clearing chips from the cut path before they re-weld to the plastic or the tool. |
| Cooling | Air Blast (compressed air directed at the cut). | Recommended for melting-prone plastics like HDPE and Acrylic to keep the temperature down without introducing liquids. |
